چکیده
Aim: To determine the relation between the disease activity of ulcerative colitis and mean platelet volume (MPV) and to evaluate the clinical usage of a more simple and easier determinant. Method: Complete blood count, C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation ratio (ESR), serum albumine and prothrombine time were measured in a total of 41 ulcerative colitis patients. The clinic, pathologic, colonoscopic disease activities of ulcerative colitis and the localisation of colonic involvement were designated. TruloeveWitts score was used for the clinic activity of ulcerative colitis. Result: Eleven patients were in remission (26.8%) and 30 had active disease (73.2%). The mean values were; age: 44.58±15.08 year (20 women, 21 men), CRP: 36.80±32.90 mg/L, ESR: 52.29±31.23 mm/h, albumin: 3.43±0.65 gr/dl, platelets: 400780±161196 K/mm3, MPV: 7.41±1.04 fentoliter (fl), prothrombine time: 13.32±1.05 second, respectively. By the correlation analysis there was a negative significant relation between CRP and MPV (p<0.05). The mean MPV values of the 11 patient in remission were 8.62±1.15 fl. The mean MPV values of the 30 patients who had active disease were 6.97±0.53 fl. The patients having active ulcerative colitis had lower MPV values when compared with the patients who had inactive disease (in remission) (p<0.001). There were negative significant relations between MPV and clinical, pathological aand colonoscopic activity indices (p<0.001). However there was no relation between the extent of the disease involvement and MPV. Conclusion: MPV can reflect the disease activity of ulcerative colitis.

Serum Interleukin-23 Levels in Patients with Ulcerative Colitis
Background: Patients with ulcerative colitis are at increased risk of inflammation. Interleukin 23 (IL-23) is a newly identified cytokine with increased expression in inflamed biopsies of colon mucosa in patients with Crohn's disease; however, there is inconsistent evidence on its role in ulcerative colitis. Objective: We aimed to compare serum IL-23 level in patients with ulcerative colitis an...
متن کاملEffects of coenzyme Q10 on health-related quality of life, clinical disease activity and blood pressure in patients with mild to moderate ulcerative colitis: a randomized clinical trial
Background: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is specified by a chronic mucosal inflammation that has a deleterious impact on the quality of life (QoL). Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) appears to influence disease activity by its obvious properties. Therefore, the current research intends to assess the impacts of CoQ10 on QoL, disease activity, and blood pressure in UC patients. Methods: This clinical trial per...
متن کاملAssessment of the influence of the inflammatory process on the activation of blood platelets and morphological parameters in patients with ulcerative colitis (colitis ulcerosa).
Ulcerative colitis (colitis ulcerosa) is a non-specific inflammatory bowel disease of unknown etiology. The symptoms which are observed in the course of ulcerative colitis are: an increase in the number of leukocytes and blood platelets, an increase in the concentration of IL-6 and anemia. Blood platelets are the key element, linking the processes of hemostasis, inflammation and the repair of d...
متن کاملEvaluation of QT and P Wave Dispersion and Mean Platelet Volume among Inflammatory Bowel Disease Patients
BACKGROUND In inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) number of thromboembolic events are increased due to hypercoagulupathy and platelet activation. Increases in mean platelet volume (MPV) can lead to platelet activation, this leads to thromboembolic events and can cause acute coronary syndromes. In IBD patients, QT-dispersion and P-wave dispersion are predictors of ventricular arrhythmias and atrial...
متن کاملMarkers of inflammation and influence of nitric oxide on platelet activation in the course of ulcerative colitis
Ulcerative colitis is a non-specific inflammatory bowel disease of unknown etiology. We investigated whether severe form of ulcerative colitis may lead to increased number of platelets, changes in platelet parameters and their activation. To address our objectives, we measured concentrations of nitric oxide and markers of inflammation. We found increased number of low-volume platelets in a group...
